BYU Cougars vs. Navy Midshipmen

CFB: 8:00 PM EST

Sep. 07, 2020

TV: ESPN
Latest Odds : PK Total 52.5

On Monday September 7th, the BYU Cougars visit the Navy Midshipmen at Jack Stephens Field in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the opening game of the 2020 college football season for both.

BYU was 7-6 in 2019 and lost to the Hawaii Warriors 38-24 in the Hawaii Bowl. Zach Wilson returns as the starting quarterback after last season throwing for 2,382 yards and 11 touchdowns with 9 interceptions. BYU lost its top three wide receivers from last season but tight end Matt Bushman and wide out Gunner Romney both return. Lopini Katoa and Sione Finau will share duties at running back for BYU.

Defensively, BYU has over a dozen of its leading tacklers from last year returning. Included in that group, is leading tackler from last season Kavika Fonua. The linebacker had 83 tackles in 2019. Chaz Ah You also returns after leading BYU last season in tackles for a loss with 5.5. The secondary has three returning starters but lacks depth and any injuries could be devastating to the unit.

Navy finished last season at 11-2 and looks to carry that momentum into a strong 2020 campaign. Dual-threat Malcolm Perry is no longer under center for Navy and Perry Olsen is expected to take over the Midshipmen's offense seamlessly, as the option offense is versatile and several players could play at quarterback. Ryna Mitchell and Mychal Cooper are the top two wide receivers in an offense that rarely passes the ball.

On the defensive side of the line of scrimmage, the Midshipmen lost four of their top five tacklers but Diego Fagot returns and will lead the linebackers unit. However, three of the four down lineman will be new for the Midshipmen and several of the members of the defensive secondary have also been replaced.

Zach Wilson returns under center for the BYU Cougars, has Matt Bushman back at tight end and a run-by-committee rushing attack that will keep the Navy defense off balance. Navy is replacing its top offensive player from last season Malcolm Perry and we'll need time to come up to speed with his replacement. Final Score Prediction, BYU Cougars win and cover ATS 27-23
