The New Mexico State Aggies visit Martin Stadium in Pullman, Washington on Saturday to play the No. 23 ranked Washington State Cougars in the opening game of the college football regular season for both.
New Mexico State was 3-9 last season. Josh Adkins returns under center for the Aggies and will have four starters returning on the offensive line to open holes and pass protect. Jason Huntley and Christian Gibson return to lead the ground game and Bryce Roberts and OJ Clark will be the top receivers. The defense was strong with the pass rush last season and the line returns most of its regulars, while the linebackers lack experience and the secondary lacks depth.
Although Gardner Minshew has moved on, the Cougars offense has plenty of playmakers regardless of who starts at quarterback. The receiving corps will have Davontavean Martin and Easop Winston Jr. returning, while the running back spot will be in the hands of Max Borghi. The offensive line lost a starter to the NFL but is deep. Anthony Gordon will start at quarterback for the Cougars giving Washington State a strong arm and leadership. Gage Gubrud a transfer could step in if Gordon falters.

Josh Adkins threw for 2,563 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season for the Aggies. Christian Gibson is the leading running back returning from last season with 590 yards and six touchdowns. OJ Clark caught 52 passes for 512 yards and one touchdown in 2018 and will be a primary target of Adkins in 2019.
Starting quarterback Anthony Gordon threw for just 17 yards and one interception last season for Washington State. Max Borghi rushed for 366 yards and eight touchdowns in 2018 and will be the lead back in the Cougars offense. Davontavean Martin returns as the lead wide receiver for the Cougars after catching 69 passes for 685 yards and eight touchdowns in 2018.
