The Detroit Pistons visit Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday to play the Indiana Pacers in the opening game of the NBA regular season for both. Detroit needs Blake Griffin to stay healthy for an entire season as the Pistons will only go as far as their explosive forward can take them. Most of the roster that reached the playoffs last season returns including Griffin, Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard and Andre Drummond.

Derrick Rose was signed to bring veteran experience and leadership to the backcourt. The Pistons also added Tim Frazier and Markieff Morris while drafting Sekou Doumbouya. If Drummond and Griffin can thrive down low the Pistons may break into the Eastern Conference’s top five. Griffin played 75 games last season and must play as many or more this season if the Pistons hope to be legitimate contenders in the East.

The Pacers will not have high scorer Victor Oladipo back after the guard missed most of last season with an injury. The Pacers added former Bucks player Malcolm Brogdon and signed Jeremy Lamb, Justin Holiday, T.J. Warren and T.J. McConnell. However, gone is Bojan Bogdanovic. The Pacers used their No. 18 pick overall to draft Goga Bitadze.

Oladipo’s return is still not known, but with the frontcourt strong thanks to Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner back the Pacers can maintain their own. The new players know their roles and Turner played for the U.S. in the FIBA World Cup and says that experience helped his game. Brogdon takes over as the full time point guard and his acquisition is the biggest move Indiana made with a great deal riding on its success.
